Day 1 — Literacy Launchpad: First Session Flow
Takeaway: Start by teaching the lesson plan, then completing the lesson plan, then acting on the lesson plan.
This creates a learn → practice → apply rhythm that will repeat for all 31 days.
1️⃣ Opening the Session — “What We’re Doing Today”
Goal: Introduce the Launchpad, explain the 3‑step method, and set expectations.
Script you can use:
> “Today is Day 1 of the Literacy Launchpad. Every day we learn the lesson plan, complete the lesson plan, and then act on the lesson plan. This helps us build real skills we can use in life, work, and the community.”
What we'll cover:
- Launchpad Purpose — Build reading, writing, confidence, and real‑world literacy
- Daily Structure — Learn → Complete → Act
- Expectations — Participation, respect, effort, no judgment
2️⃣ Step One: LEARN the Lesson Plan
Goal: Teach the skill of the day.
Day 1 Skill: Understanding a simple lesson plan and how to follow instructions.
Teach these three parts:
- Objective — What we’re trying to learn
- Steps — How we will learn it
- Outcome — What we should be able to do after
Activity (5 minutes):
Give them a simple Day 1 lesson plan:
Lesson Plan: “Following Written Instructions”
- Objective: Understand how to follow a written instruction
- Steps: Read → Identify → Do
- Outcome: Complete a short written task correctly
3️⃣ Step Two: COMPLETE the Lesson Plan
Goal: Practice the skill with a short worksheet or activity.
Activity (10 minutes):
Hand out or read aloud a simple instruction sheet:
Example:
1. Write your name at the top.
2. Circle the word “Launchpad.”
3. Underline the sentence that explains the objective.
4. Write one sentence about why literacy matters to you.
This builds:
- Reading comprehension
- Instruction following
- Confidence
- Personal connection to literacy
Group Check‑In:
Ask:
> “Which step was easiest? Which step was hardest?”
This helps you understand their literacy level without embarrassing anyone.
4️⃣ Step Three: ACT on the Lesson Plan
Goal: Apply the skill in a real‑life situation.
Real‑Life Application (10 minutes):
Give them a real‑world instruction sheet such as:
- A job application direction
- A community center flyer
- A simple intake form
- A workshop schedule
Ask them to:
- Identify the objective
- Identify the steps
- Identify the outcome
This teaches them how to read real documents they will face in life.
5️⃣ Closing the Session — “What We Learned Today”
Goal: Reinforce confidence and preview Day 2.
Recap:
- We learned how to read a lesson plan
- We completed a written instruction activity
- We applied the skill to a real‑life document
Preview:
> “Tomorrow we build on this by learning how to break down paragraphs and find key information.”
6️⃣ Optional Add‑Ons for a Strong First Day
- Icebreaker Literacy Game
- Short Writing Prompt
- Mini Vocabulary Challenge
- Confidence Check
